Senior Software Engineer

Kenyalang Digital builds custom software and cloud infrastructure for banks, government agencies, and SMEs across East Malaysia. Founded in 2016, the team has grown from three co-founders to a full product and engineering department serving clients from Kuching all the way to Kota Kinabalu. The engineering culture here leans deliberately senior-heavy, with a strong bias toward direct ownership over layers of process, and we back that with the autonomy and tooling engineers actually need to do their best work.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead the architecture of our core banking integration platform, which is used by three regional banks and a handful of government agencies. You'll work directly with the CTO on system design decisions and mentor two mid-level engineers, with real influence over where the platform goes next. It is a genuinely senior role for someone who wants to own systems end to end rather than just close tickets on a board.

Key responsibilities

• Design and maintain REST and event-driven APIs handling millions of transactions every month
• Own PostgreSQL schema design, indexing, and query performance across the entire platform
• Review pull requests and set engineering standards and conventions for the backend team
• Participate in the on-call rotation for production incidents and lead post-incident reviews
• Lead architecture discussions and technical design for new bank and agency integration partners
• Mentor two mid-level engineers through structured pairing and thorough code review
• Coordinate with the CTO on quarterly technical roadmap and capacity planning
• Investigate performance bottlenecks and propose scalable fixes before they become incidents

Requirements

• At least 5 years building production backend systems in Node.js, Go, or Java
• Strong understanding of relational database design and query optimisation at scale
• Hands-on experience with event-driven architecture using Kafka, SQS, or similar
• Comfortable mentoring junior engineers and leading design and code reviews
• Degree in Computer Science or equivalent, demonstrable practical experience
• A track record of owning a system from design through to production support
