Baram Insurance Brokers is an established insurance brokerage serving individual and commercial clients across northern Sarawak. We arrange motor, property, marine, and commercial cover, acting for the client rather than for any single insurer. We're hiring an Underwriter to assess and price commercial and individual insurance applications for our northern Sarawak client base. The role blends technical risk assessment with practical, grounded judgement about the businesses and assets we insure. You'll work closely with our brokers and directly with insurers and reinsurers, and over time you'll build genuine expertise in the distinctive risk profile of a region with an unusual industrial, marine, and geographic makeup.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and price commercial and individual insurance applications across multiple lines
• Review risk documentation, survey reports, and claims history submitted by applicants
• Liaise with insurers and reinsurers on complex, unusual, or high-value underwriting queries
• Recommend appropriate cover, exclusions, endorsements, and premium terms to brokers
• Maintain accurate, audit-ready underwriting files for every risk written
• Review renewals and recommend adjustments based on claims experience and exposure
• Support brokers with technical input during client negotiations and placements
• Keep current with regulatory and market changes affecting underwriting practice

Requirements

• Degree in Finance, Insurance, Actuarial Science, or a related discipline
• At least 2 years of general insurance underwriting experience is preferred
• Detail-oriented, with sound and defensible risk assessment judgement
• Progress toward professional insurance qualifications is an advantage
• Confident communicator, comfortable dealing with insurers and brokers
