Engineering Intern – Mechanical

SIMILAJAU MARINE & OFFSHORE ENGINEERING supports vessel maintenance and offshore fabrication projects out of Bintulu, and takes on engineering interns each intake to work alongside its design team. Because design and workshop sit close together here, interns get to see the full journey from drawing to fabricated component rather than just theory on a screen. It is a genuinely useful placement for a mechanical engineering student who wants hands-on exposure to both the drawing office and the shop floor, and a real understanding of how marine engineering actually gets done.

This is a three-month internship for a mechanical engineering student to shadow our design and workshop teams on real marine fabrication projects, with genuine exposure to both the drawing office and the shop floor. You'll assist with CAD updates, observe fabrication, and support documentation under supervision. It suits a curious student interested in both design and hands-on fabrication, who is keen to ask questions of design and workshop staff alike and to leave the placement with a solid, practical understanding of mechanical engineering in a marine context.

Key responsibilities

• Shadow design engineers on active fabrication projects
• Assist with basic CAD drawing updates under supervision
• Observe and learn workshop fabrication processes
• Support documentation of completed design changes
• Ask questions of both design and workshop staff to understand the process
• Help keep drawing and project records organised

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Basic CAD skills in AutoCAD or SolidWorks
• Available for a minimum three-month placement
